Frito-Lay is the world’s premier manufacturer of potato chips and other snack foods, with production plants throughout the United States. Several years ago, the company was experiencing excessively high workers’ compensation costs and a high rate of OSHA recordability. Injury rates were rising, while productivity was falling.
In a pilot project, IMC HealthCare worked closely with the Frito-Lay safety and management team to institute a proactive program in the company’s Perry, Georgia plant. It started with an IMC workplace survey of work procedures. Thanks to our proprietary IMC software, we were able to identify the specific activities and plant locations that were experiencing the highest injury rates.
With that information in hand, several programs were instituted to change work procedures, including instruction to improve work practices, a shift from manual to mechanical lifting and other initiatives. Today, our on-site facilities offer wide-ranging occupational-health services, wellness counseling and extensive case management.
Results: Working together with Frito-Lay Risk Management, Safety and Plant Management Teams, we achieved an overall 50% reduction in worker's compensation costs in the first year. The IMC programs were expanded to numerous other Frito-Lay plants throughout the country.

“As an IMC HealthCare employee , you are always guaranteed that support is just a phone call away. Either it be nurses at other sites or the management at IMC HealthCare headquarters."
For generations, Campbell soup has been a staple food item on America’s dinner tables. The world’s largest soup manufacturer also produces such highly regarded brands as V8 Beverages, Prego Pasta Sauces and Pepperidge Farms.
In 2003, the company recognized that the lack of standardization in its on-site occupational health-care centers needed to be addressed. They turned to IMC HealthCare to undertake the task of improving consistency and quality in more than a dozen company health centers.
IMC set to work creating a customized program that implemented consistent training, quality standards, case management and programs for wellness. We also established key quality indicators and benchmarks to help evaluate future results.
Results: Vastly improved health-care quality, consistency and employee morale.

Sea Ray Boats, a division of Brunswick Corporation, is a leading manufacturer of high-end, recreational boats and yachts. Needless to say, this line of business requires a great deal of very labor-intensive activity, with a high potential for injuries.
In 2000, Sea Ray approached IMC HealthCare to reduce workers’ compensation costs and OSHA recordability rates. Prior to this, all injured workers were sent to retail health-care facilities, resulting in high costs and lost time.
IMC first provided an on-site occupational health-care center at the company’s Merritt Island, Florida manufacturing facility. The resulting high quality of care and proactive injury-prevention measures were accompanied by IMC’s fixed-cost structure, which results in predictable health-care costs month after month. Our program more than paid for itself in health-related savings.
Results: Working closely with Sea Ray Management, Environmental Health & Safety, and Risk Management, as a joint effort, worker's compensation costs and lost time injuries were reduced in the first year by a total of 44%. OSHA recordability was also dramatically lower and there was a significant increase in employee morale due to immediate access of on-site health care. IMC now provides on-site health care to all Sea Ray facilities in Florida.

The multi-national, multi-billion-dollar Liz Claiborne, Inc. markets a wide range of fashion apparel and accessories for both men and women. With a large workforce, keeping employees healthy and productive is vital to company operations and profitability.
In 1999, IMC HealthCare launched on-site health-and-wellness centers at the company’s international headquarters in North Bergen, New Jersey and at a distribution facility in Mt. Pocono, Pennsylvania. We began providing a wide variety of services, including occupational health care, general health-and-wellness programs, acute-illness care and workers’ compensation case management. IMC also instituted management programs for the company’s Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) compliance, and short- and long-term disability cases.
All these programs were designed with the aim of reducing overall health-care costs, improving the general health of employees, and increasing productivity by reducing sick days and speeding access to practitioners.
Results: Working closely with the Liz Claiborne Risk Management Team, TPA, Safety Department and Management Team, we achieved a 55% reduction in worker's compensation costs in the first year. In addition, there was a reduction in both absenteeism and overall health-benefit costs.

“Aside from the personal aspect, IMC provides excellent health care - never putting the client's employees at risk."
With 12,000 employees and a company history of more than eighty years, American Axle and Manufacturing is the world’s largest producer of drive trains and axles for cars and light trucks. The company had been relying on outsourced, on-site health clinics for some time, but was dissatisfied with the service.
When American Axle called on IMC HealthCare, we had to win the confidence not only of management but also of United Auto Workers union leadership. In response, we set up on-site physician and mid-level health centers, complete with pharmacy and emergency services. Two facilities were established at the company’s Buffalo, New York facilities and one at a Three Rivers, Michigan plant.
Working in close cooperation with company management and union leaders, we created a customized plan that would assure significant cost savings as well as overwhelming employee approval.
Results: Dramatic reduction in worker’s compensation costs; 96 percent “good to excellent” rating by employees; expansion to all U.S. sites.

The premier grocery chain in Florida and Georgia, Publix Supermarkets had long addressed employee health care using traditional providers and self-insurance. To see if they could reduce costs, company management invited IMC HealthCare to set up an on-site pilot program at a Deerfield Beach, Florida distribution center. The program would offer care to approximately 900 distribution-center employees as well as workers at 75 nearby stores.
Our plan called for a physician-level health center that offered the services of doctors, nurses, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. As a pilot program, the goal was to see if IMC could not only reduce health-care costs but assure high employee acceptance as well.
Working with company management, we established a savings projection that would more than pay for the cost of the IMC health center in just the first six months of operation.
Results: Dramatic savings in first six months, far exceeding projections; 99% employee-satisfaction rating; expanding program to additional locations.
