Dr. Alonso graduated with the degree of Doctor of Medicine from Universidad Central del Este in the Dominican Republic. He is Board certified in Pediatrics, having completed Pediatric residency program at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, New York, an affiliate of Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He subsequently completed training in Ambulatory Pediatrics at Winthrop Hospital in Long Island, New York, an affiliate of Stony Brook.

Dr. Alonso’s passion for primary care and Emergency Medicine took him to complete residency in Emergency Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center and Elmhurst Hospital, affiliates of Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Upon graduation, he received the Robert Altman award for excellence in Emergency Medicine. Alonso practiced Emergency Medicine at Palmetto General Hospital and Homestead Hospital. He held the position of Assistant Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Palmetto General Hospital and was a member of the Hospital’s Physician Executive Committee and Disaster Committee. He also held the position of emergency medicine preceptor for the third and fourth year medical students from Nova University.

Dr. Alonso comes to IMC with 20 years’ experience in managed care. He practiced as an urgent care physician at CAC-Florida Medical Centers and held the position of Regional Medical Director under Humana.As Regional Medical Director, he was instrumental in the management of multi-specialty medical centers. He was also a leader in the implementation of a heart failure disease management program with a multidisciplinary team of specialist and health care providers. He also launched the medical centers’ readmissions program, a program focused on reducing avoidable readmissions by bridging communication between the inpatient and outpatient settings and ensuring a safe transition for patients. Dr. Alonso brings vast experience in the leadership of multispecialty medical centers, team building, associate engagement, recruitment of top talent physicians, utilization management and leading disease management programs.
